Annual Alexandrium catenella blooms in the Gulf of Maine produce potent neurotoxins that accumulate in shellfish and cause Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning (PSP) in human consumers. NOAA NCCOS has developed Gulf of Maine Alexandrium catenella predictive models to better predict and monitor blooms of this species and and shellfish toxicity with the goal to minimize impacts to public health and coastal economies. Save the Date! The 12th U.S. Symposium on Harmful Algae will be held on October 27-November 1, 2024 at Holiday Inn Portland by the Bay in Portland, Maine. Additional information will be posted when available.

The next Gulf of Maine HAB Science Symposium will be held in Portsmouth, NH on March 12-13, 2024.  This meeting brings together researchers, managers, and stakeholders to share research findings, information and data, and monitoring plans about HABs in New England waters.
